Accessible housing remains one of Australia’s greatest social challenges. Youngcare set out to make the process clearer and more achievable for those who need it most.
For many Australians living with disability, finding a home that truly meets their needs can be complex and overwhelming. Recognising this, national not-for-profit Youngcare set out to change the way people access and design homes that support freedom, dignity, and choice.
In partnership with Dr Courtney Wright from Griffith University’s Menzies Institute for Health and The Hopkins Centre, Youngcare launched My Accessible Home. It’s an innovative online tool designed to help people with disabilities, their families, and carers plan and create homes tailored to individual needs.
Solutions
Working closely with Dr Wright and the Youngcare team, we designed a digital experience that transformed research into practical, empowering action. The website guided users through an interactive quiz that generated a personalised Dream Home Report, a document that helped families, builders, and real estate professionals understand the specific accessibility requirements of each person.
Starting with academic research, we mapped the information architecture and developed a clear, inclusive user journey. The visual identity was designed to feel friendly and optimistic, using bright colours, simple icons, and approachable language to create a sense of comfort and ease. Built to AA Accessibility standards, the site supported a wide range of user needs while maintaining warmth and humanity.
Results
The My Accessible Home project delivered a platform that empowered people with disability to take ownership of their home design process. The website successfully balanced functionality and empathy, helping users feel confident, informed, and supported.
Although the project has since concluded, it remains an inspiring example of how collaboration between research, technology, and design can lead to more inclusive communities. Its framework continues to influence how governments, builders, and planners approach accessibility in housing today.
