Brand Expression
Premium quality alone doesn't guarantee premium perception.
Established in 1965, Kerwee had spent over 55 years building a reputation as one of Australia's finest beef producers. As part of Stockyard Beef, they'd earned recognition as Australia's most awarded range of grain-fed Wagyu and Angus products, including the 2019 MSA Excellence in Eating Quality Award for Most Outstanding MSA Feedlot in Queensland.
Their beef was genuinely world-class. But their brand wasn't communicating that to the market that mattered most.
With increasing demand and new opportunities emerging in the United States (their primary export market), Kerwee needed a brand that could compete in the highly competitive American beef industry. They needed to resonate with discerning US consumers: top-rated chefs, restaurateurs, and hoteliers who had countless premium beef options to choose from.
They needed a strategic brand refresh that could help them stand out in a foreign market without losing what made them special in the first place.
Challenges
Breaking Into a Competitive Foreign Market
The US beef industry is saturated with premium brands, each competing for attention from the same high-end buyers. Kerwee needed to differentiate themselves meaningfully in a market where consumer preferences, buying behaviours, and competitive dynamics were completely different from their home market.
Balancing Refresh With Recognition
Existing customers already associated Kerwee with premium quality. Any brand changes risked confusing loyal buyers or diminishing the equity they'd built over decades. The refresh needed to feel evolved and sophisticated while remaining clearly recognisable as Kerwee.
Speaking to a Specific, Discerning Audience
The brand needed to connect directly with professionals who evaluate beef quality critically and have relationships with multiple premium suppliers (think chefs, restaurateurs, and hoteliers). The brand had to earn credibility with this audience quickly and communicate quality standards they'd instantly recognise and value.
Designing for Flexibility and Complexity
The brand needed to work across diverse applications, from packaging with detailed specifications and colours to minimal corporate presentations to merchandise that would sit in top US restaurants. Each context required different logo variations, merchandise applications, and design approaches while maintaining a cohesive, premium identity.
Solutions
We approached this project with deep market research and strategic thinking, ensuring every design decision was informed by real consumer insights and industry dynamics.
Comprehensive Market Research
We conducted extensive research into the US beef market and target demographics to understand consumer behaviours, preferences, and industry trends. This insight shaped every strategic and creative decision that followed, ensuring the brand would genuinely resonate rather than just look good.
Strategic Brand Refresh
We reviewed every element of the existing Kerwee brand, including logo, design language, visual identity, and strategically evolved what needed updating while preserving what created recognition and trust. The result honours their 55-year heritage while feeling contemporary enough to compete in today's market.
Flexible Logo System
We created multiple logo versions designed for specific situations: corporate presentations, space-restricted applications, black-and-white printing, collateral use, and representation of various beef grades and quality levels. This system gives Kerwee the flexibility to maintain brand consistency regardless of context.
Enhanced Packaging Design
We designed new packaging with an exterior shape and ribbon device that works across different packaging styles while allowing flexibility for specifications and product information. The colour-coded system clearly communicates different grades and quality levels which is critical for professional buyers making purchasing decisions.
Brand Extension Concepts
We developed merchandising concepts that extend the brand into new touchpoints, creating memorable, desirable items that help Kerwee connect with premium suppliers in unique ways. These concepts position Kerwee as more than just a supplier, but as a brand worth associating with.
Premium Brand Language
The refreshed design draws influence from classic typography to highlight Kerwee's strong history and tradition while feeling clear, bold, and modern. Every element reinforces the premium positioning their quality deserves.
Results
What We Achieved
Kerwee received a refreshed brand identity that successfully bridges Australian heritage with American market appeal. The logo represents their dedication to quality while being clear, bold, and easily scalable across all applications. The design communicates premium quality immediately, which is exactly what the client needed to compete for attention from discerning US buyers.
The flexible logo system and packaging designs give them the tools to maintain brand consistency while adapting to different contexts, products, and marketing needs. The merchandising concepts provide new ways to connect with target consumers and remain memorable in a crowded market.
The Bigger Picture
This brand refresh positioned Kerwee to capitalise on growing US market opportunities with confidence. They now have a brand that resonates with American chefs, restaurateurs, and hoteliers while maintaining recognition among existing customers who've trusted them for years.
The strategic approach ensured that every design element serves a purpose and works across both corporate and consumer contexts. This isn't just a prettier version of what they had; it's a strategic tool for market penetration and growth.
Most importantly, the updated brand matches the quality of what's inside the package. For a premium product competing in a premium market, that alignment between perception and reality is everything.
Kerwee now had the tools and foundation to compete visually and strategically with the best American beef brands while maintaining the unique story and heritage that makes them special.

You deserve a brand that communicates your quality.
If you're competing in new markets where perception matters as much as product, or if your brand isn't reflecting the quality you actually deliver, we'd love to help you bridge that gap.
