Some healthcare services are inherently difficult to talk about, and bowel screening is one of them.

Colonoscopy Clinic, formerly known as Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (GIE) and Brisbane Colonoscopy, opened 35 years ago at The Wesley Hospital as one of Australia's first open-access endoscopy and colonoscopy services. Their mission has always been clear: save patients time and money while providing rapid access to care that helps GPs take better care of their patients.

But after three and a half decades, they were facing challenges that a good reputation alone couldn't solve. Patients weren't returning for follow-up appointments. The general community didn't fully understand the risks of bowel cancer or actively seek screening. And there was a cultural reluctance to even talk about bowel health, let alone book a colonoscopy.

They needed to rebrand and refocus, shifting their primary offering to colonoscopies and endoscopies while building a brand that could scale across Brisbane and potentially nationally. More importantly, they needed to break through the stigma, fear, and avoidance that surrounds bowel screening by creating an online presence that could educate, reassure, and encourage people to take action on their health.

The challenge wasn't just building awareness. It was changing how people feel about something they'd rather not think about at all.

Challenges

Breaking Through Cultural Stigma and Avoidance

There's a general unwillingness in the community to discuss or pursue bowel screening. The subject feels uncomfortable, invasive, or embarrassing. Any brand approach that felt clinical, fear-based, or "gross" would reinforce avoidance rather than overcome it.

Low Awareness of Risk

Many people simply don't understand their bowel cancer risk or why screening matters. Without actively seeking information, they won't encounter the services Colonoscopy Clinic provides which was creates a critical gap between need and awareness.

Poor Patient Follow-Through

Patients weren't attending call-back or follow-up appointments, creating both health risks and operational challenges. The practice needed systems and messaging that made follow-ups feel simple and important rather than burdensome.

Building for Scale

With ambitions to expand across Brisbane and potentially nationally, the brand needed to be easily scalable to accommodate new practices and locations without losing consistency or requiring constant redesign.

Balancing Tone

The brand needed to feel upbeat, light-hearted, friendly, and approachable, making an uncomfortable topic feel approachable while still retaining the seriousness required for healthcare communications about a potentially deadly disease.

Solutions

We took a patient-focused approach that prioritised understanding fears and stigmas rather than simply promoting medical services.

Strategic Rebrand and Patient-Centred Positioning

Through collaborative workshops and intensive sessions with the Colonoscopy Clinic team, we developed new naming, brand identity, and visual language designed to feel positive, accessible, and human. The brand focuses on the benefits of a healthy life rather than instilling fear, which was a critical shift in how bowel screening is typically communicated.

Website Design and Development That Educates and Reassures

We created a functional, accessible website where patients can easily find information without feeling overwhelmed or scared. The imagery emphasises healthy, positive living while the content addresses common concerns directly, breaking down stigmas through honest, approachable communication written for all demographics.

Marketing Strategy That Breaks Stigma

We developed marketing collateral, advertising, and social media strategies that increase public knowledge about bowel screening while dispelling myths. The consistent tone remains friendly and encouraging rather than fear-based.

Scalable Brand System for Growth

We created brand extensions and comprehensive guidelines that allow Colonoscopy Clinic to expand into new locations while maintaining consistent identity and messaging to support their vision for Brisbane-wide and potentially national growth.

Results

What We Achieved

Colonoscopy Clinic launched with a strong, distinctive brand that stands out in the medical sector through unique language and visuals. The brand identity is genuinely positive and demonstrates understanding of patient needs and worries.

The website serves as an educational platform that makes bowel screening feel accessible rather than terrifying. Patients can find information easily, understand their risks without panic, and take action with confidence. The approachable tone and patient-focused content help overcome the avoidance and stigma that typically prevents people from seeking screening.

The Bigger Picture

This rebrand was a fundamental shift in how bowel screening is communicated. By prioritising patient psychology and addressing real barriers (stigma, fear, avoidance), we helped Colonoscopy Clinic create a brand that can actually change behaviour, not just look professional.

The scalable brand system positions them for the growth they envisioned, with a foundation that can expand across Brisbane and beyond while maintaining the consistency and approachability that makes the brand effective. They now have the tools to build Brisbane-wide recognition and continue their 35-year mission of making life-saving healthcare accessible.

Most importantly, the brand proves that healthcare communications can be both serious and friendly, clinical and human, informative and reassuring. When you're asking people to do something they'd rather avoid, that balance is essential.
